First edition of the first American scientific book to be illustrated with a photograph, the second American book overall, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Charles Girard, Esq, with the regards of the Author", and with Girard's signature on the title page. The folding salt print frontispiece depicts fossilized animal tracks - those of dinosaurs of the Early Jurassic period - in a sandstone slab.Warren (1778-1856) was a surgeon best known for performing the first recorded surgery under anaesthesia and for his popular lectures on physiology and anatomy. "Warren's achievements as a medical educator and institution builder fundamentally shaped the American medical profession in the ante-bellum period" (ANB). His interest in geology and palaeontology led to his election as president of the Boston Natural History Society. His specimens and artefacts became the Warren Museum at Harvard Medical School after his death.Charles Frédéric Girard (1822-1895) was a biologist who specialized in ichthyology and herpetology. He was an assistant of Louis Agassiz and worked at the Smithsonian on their North American reptiles, amphibians, and fish collection.
