Photograph album recording the activities of HMS Emerald from September 1928 to January 1931. A detailed record of the ship's movements for four years with the 4th Cruiser Squadron throughout the East Indies and Africa, including many shots of Karachi, Bombay, Zanzibar, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Rangoon. The front pastedown is inscribed with a track-log of the Emerald's daily movements and the rear pastedown with a similar log for HMS Delhi (not featured in the photographs).HMS Emerald was a light cruiser commissioned in January 1926. She travelled first to the Middle East and hosted Ibn Saud at Jeddah on 1 March that year. She was also part of a Royal Navy flotilla protecting British interests during the Nanking Incident. According to this album, she spent the final months of 1928 in India and Sri Lanka, with a brief trip to Aden in October. In July 1929 she moved to the east coast of Africa, docking at Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Tanga, and Zanzibar. November saw her return to the Middle East, this time to Muscat, Abadan, and Basra. 1930 was spent almost entirely in the East Indies, until December when she began her return to Britain via Aden, Malta, and Gibraltar.The photographs show her undergoing a variety of activities, from catching turtles to launching seaplanes and loading torpedoes.
