And here I should like to record that never during my long experience on the river have I met an unpleasant or inhospitable junkman" (Prefatory Note, vol. I).Worcester (1890-1969) served on the China Station and saw wide service during the Great War: blockade of Tsingtao (modern day Qingdao), East India Squadron, Egypt Squadron and Red Sea Patrol, defence of Aden, Red Sea and Akaba bombardments, landing parties at El Wege, Iceland, South America and 11th Submarine Flotilla (see War 1914-1918: Record of Services given and Honours attained by Members of the Chinese Customs Service, 1922). Following the war he spent three decades (up until 1948) as the River Inspector for the Chinese Maritime Customs Service and wrote extensively on Chinese river craft; his collection of models of Chinese junks is held by the Science Museum.
