Ancient Tales and Folklore of Japan. First edition of this collection of Japanese folklore, ghost stories, animal fables, and local legends, gathered by Gordon Smith during his years travelling in Japan. The author notes that the tales were drawn from his illustrated diaries and from oral accounts by local informants. The tales include "A Miraculous Sword", "The Isolated or Desolated Island", "The Diving-Woman of Oiso Bay", and "A Festival of the Awabi Fish" among others. The colour plates are illustrations by Japanese artists after Smith's sketches. It was published by A. & C. Black at the height of the firm's colour-book production.
