A Chinese water carrier. A delicate survival of a Chinese paper figure, made by a Chinese girl in North China in 1911, depicting a water carrier with suspended vessels worked in coloured paper and thread. The girl was based in a mission-school and the work includes a contemporary note by the Methodist missionary William Eddon. Eddon's note states that: "The above was drawn painted and cut out by a Chinese girl in a mission school in North China and is her idea of what a Chinese water carrier looks like. With best wishes and regards, William Eddon Jr." and is dated September 1911. Contemporary missionary directories place Eddon in North China from at least 1902, first at Tongshan and Tientsin and later at Wutingfu in Shantung.
