Women of the War: their Heroism and Self-Sacrifice. First edition, salesman's dummy, of this lexicon of Unionist heroines of the American Civil War. This pre-publication exemplar contains extracts of the final work, as well as a sample of the gilt binding and a hand-written subscribers' list of women from Connecticut. The book was immediately popular on publication, promoting the stories of Kady Brownell, Fanny Ricketts, Belle Reynolds, and Mary Morris Husband.Moore (1828-1904) compiles narratives of courageous nurses on the battlefield, women fighting as soldiers, their rousing speeches, and exemplary Christian conduct. He also asserts that hundreds of graves marked "unknown" were of women fighting as men. Moore was a journalist and author who preserved much oral and literary ephemera of the American Civil War through his compilations of songs, ballads, political speeches, and biographies. During the conflict he was a journalist for the Union and edited The Rebellion Record, which reported on the fighting.
