Guy Deverell. First one volume edition of Le Fanu's gothic mystery, concerning the reappearance of a man thought to be killed in a duel years before. This novel was first serialized in the Dublin University Magazine from 1863-64. Deverell bought the magazine in July 1861 and published many of his best novels within including Uncle Silas in 1864. "From the editorial chair, he dictated no striking policy, even taking the Fenian rising of 1867 in his leisurely stride. He was generous to obscure contributors, notably Patrick Kennedy, and published a disproportionate amount of fiction by women, including his daughter Eleanor and his niece Rhoda Broughton." (ODNB).This edition was the first to be illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and a title page vignette. The influence of Le Fanu's ghost stories has been acknowledged by writers including Eliabeth Bowen, M. R. James, W. B. Yeats, and James Joyce.
