Cooper intended to write a series of Legends of the Thirteen Republics, but this first novel was indifferently received, and he published The Last of the Mohicans the following year. Volume 1 is dated 1825 and volume 2 is dated 1824, as noted by Blanck.Blanck states that the signature mark and one letter of the word "opinion" on p. 121 of vol 2 are missing in some copies. They are present here.Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
