Letters of Anton Tchehov, First edition. Constance Garnett writes in her introduction, "of the eighteen hundred and ninety letters of Tchehov published by his family, I have chosen for translation the letters and passages from letters which seem to me to throw most light on his character, his life and his opinions. "Katherine Mansfield, greatly influenced by Russian fiction, held Garnett in great esteem. She wrote to her on 8 February 1921, "as I laid down my copy of War & Peace tonight I felt I could no longer refrain from thanking you for the whole other world that you have revealed to us through these marvellous translations from the Russian."
