Les Tendresses Premières. First edition, one of 25 copies on paper, presentation copy, inscribed by author on the half-title in black ink, "A Edmond Gosse, Cet hommage cordial, Em Verhaeren". Gosse was a friend and supporter of the Belgian symbolist author, and has provided a note on this copy. This was the first of five volumes of Toute le Flandre, published between 1904 and 1911Gosse states below the author's inscription that "Verhaeren forgot that he had sent me an inscribed copy of this volume, and forwarded this duplicate. I feel that it would be selfish for me to keep them both now he is gone, so I hope some other lover of his work will value this. Edmund Gosse. March 1917".Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
