This essay supports the Mendelian theory of heredity, presenting the results of Correns's experiments with several cold-sensitive species of Mirabilis Jalapa, the "four o'clock flower", concluding that they display paradigmatically the interaction of homo- and heterozygotic variants within a species. Although he discovered the principles of heredity independently, Correns (1864-1933) recognized the importance and accuracy of Mendel's earlier genetic work.
