V for Vendetta. First complete run of V for Vendetta. Alan Moore penned this satire in Thatcher's England during the Cold War, imagining a near-future London ruled by the fascist Norsefire party. Moore's instinct to combine the dystopian tradition of writers like Orwell and Huxley with Jacobean aesthetics by way of V's Guy Fawkes mask and a reenvisioned gunpowder plot was undeniably influential: the iconic mask was adopted by online anarchist group Anonymous, and has been thoroughly absorbed into the symbolic order of the 21st century. In his introduction to the first issue, Moore writes, "The new riot police wear black visors, as do their horses, and their vans have rotating video cameras mounted on top. The government has expressed a desire to eradicate homosexuality, even as an abstract concept, and one can only speculate as to which minority will be the next legislated against. I'm thinking of taking my family and getting out of this country soon, sometime over the next couple of years. It's cold and it's mean-spirited and I don't like it here anymore."The first 12 chapters were serialized in black and white in Warrior from 1982 to 1985. However, the British anthology comic series was cancelled in 1985 before the story was concluded. DC re-published the first chapters in colour and Moore's then-unpublished conclusion from September 1988 to May 1989.
