Notes on Nursing: what it is, and what it is not. First edition, early state, of this landmark text. Published six months before the opening of the Nightingale School at St Thomas's Hospital, Notes on Nursing was intended as a book of hints for those working in public and private care. Nightingale "indicated a new and more responsible role for nurses, one that required proper training and medical knowledge" (Hook & Norman, p. 260). Having examined more than 100 copies of Notes on Nursing, the bibliographer Victor Skretkowicz recommends using the term "group" rather than "issue" when discussing differences, as mixtures of sheets in different states were bound together almost immediately (pp. 29-30). The binding and endpapers of this copy correspond with Skretkowicz's group 5 of the 32 that he distinguishes (the combination of Binding 1 and Endpapers 2), with the required, more condensed resetting of "Summary" on page 73, note 1.
