Instinct and Reason, First and only edition, in which the author claimed to have defined the boundary between the opposing faculties of instinct and reason, and sets forth a rationally planned system of children's education.Jarrold deemed the book marked a major contribution to the field, but in his preface to his last wok, Education of the People (1847), "he was obliged to admit that this self-perceived breakthrough had attracted little notice" (ODNB). Nonetheless, his approach is systemic and wide-ranging. Jarrold examines the difference between nature and nurture and the effect of environment and heredity to determine the best method of education. His preferred child-rearing promotes light clothing, breast-feeding, starchy food, and human contact. Jarrold holds that the early years are essential for shaping the adult character, and that an industrious, dedicated nurse is the best means to instil values of religion, prudence, and work ethic.
