Madrid: Talleres de Gráficas Luis Pérez,, 1962. A meditation on power First edition, signed by the author on the half title, with his humorous inscription: "In Evil Hour [typed], which fortunately is not so evil as in this book" (in Spanish). Marquez refers to his dislike of the Castilian Spanish translation of his work, which caused him to disown the edition. Signed copies are therefore rare; we have traced no others at auction. Marquez's second book reflects on power and violence in the aftermath of Columbia's 1948-58 civil war. It won a Colombian literary award for which the prize was 25,000 pesos and international publication. However, the Columbian Spanish in which Marquez wrote was considered alienating for a European audience, so his copyeditor translated the work. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers. Former library shelf mark sticker to front inside cover. Shallow loss to spine ends, short split at lower front joint, extremities rubbed and creased: a very good copy.
