Original orange flexible wrapper portfolio, side-bound with three brass posts, with the publisher's filing tab at the fore-edge. Original price 50 cents per copy. All photos of actual item for sale. WHAT IT IS. A working reference portfolio issued by AVIATION magazine to the aircraft industry at the moment the industry was scaling up for war. Not a picture book — a compilation of the construction-detail drawings the magazine had been running: cutaways, exploded views, structural sections, engine mounts, landing gear, armament installations, flap and control mechanisms, wing and fuselage framing. The editors' foreword is plain about the audience: "In these days of terrific pressure on the aviation industry, we feel that this book will be particularly welcome for its extraordinary reference value resulting in the saving of many valuable hours." The binding is looseleaf on purpose — the foreword invites the owner to file later sketches from the magazine into the same portfolio. COMPLETE, (collated twice by hand). This is a post-bound portfolio: the leaves are held by three brass posts through the left margin, and on this format a leaf can tear free at the post holes and leave no stub and no gutter gap, so an incomplete copy looks perfectly normal on the shelf.
