General Order Book of H.M.S. Sparrow-hawk, Dawson Mayne, Esquire, Commander. 27th December, 1830, at Sea - early nineteenth-century naval manuscript. Meticulously prepared manuscript aide-memoir of General Duties on-board the brig-sloop Sparrowhawk, 18, on anti-slaving duties in the Caribbean. Organised in the first section by the days of the week, and in the second by reference to the responsible officers. Each section signed off at the conclusion by Mayne.Mayne entered the Navy in 1812 as a First Class Volunteer on board Ville de Paris at Portsmouth. In 1813 he sailed in the Doris, 36, Capt. Robert O'Brien, as part of a large convoy for the East Indies and China, and took part in the blockading of several American merchantmen at Whampoa. In 1816 with the Trent he took part in "the bombardment of Algiers, where a slight wound in the foot and a severe one in the thigh procured him a grant from the Patriotic Fund, and a pension which lasted until his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, Mr. Mayne proceeded with the flag of Sir David Milne to North America" (O'Byrne). Commissioned lieutenant in 1821, he served on the North America and West Indies Station in the mid-1820s on Druid and Barham, "in the former of which ships we find him escorting General Bolivar and suite from La Guiara to Carthagena".
