First edition, sole printing, with an appealing Sinological provenance, of this scarce Esperanto translation of the New Year's editorial issued by state media in 1971, with WorldCat recording only two institutional copies. Dramatic political changes in China caused by the fight of Mao's heir apparent left this revolutionary call to arms dangerously outdated by the end of the year.During the Cultural Revolution, newspaper editorials to mark the Chinese New Year were important opportunities for party propagandists to outline the triumphs of the preceding year and set the political tone of the coming months. The 1971 editorial, co-written by editors from the country's three largest political publications (The People's Daily, Red Flag, and Liberation Army Daily), heaped praise on Mao's leadership but also highlighted the contribution of Lin Biao, Mao's designated successor, to the country's many political "victories." Yet, at the time these words were written, a considerable rift was developing between Mao and Lin. Eight months later, Lin would die in a plane crash while fleeing China out of concern for his safety. State media later claimed that Lin's son was plotting to assassinate Mao.
