First edition of this historical survey, published shortly before the First Opium War, chronicling the efforts made by the East India Company and British diplomats to establish relations with the Qing empire. Discussions of commercial dealings point to some of the difficulties that eventually caused Britain to seek commercial arrangements established on a much more preferential footing.The author (1770-1866) was a secretary of the East India Company who wrote several books on British colonial policy and its history, notably with respect to India. This work is sometimes described as having been first published by Auber in 1831. This is an error rooted in a mis-transcription on WorldCat, and no subject bibliographies record an 1831 edition.
