First edition under this title of a collection of offprints from T'oung-Pao, the oldest international journal of sinology; scarce: Library Hub gives just one location in British and Irish institutional libraries (Cambridge), WorldCat adds 16 worldwide. Gustaaf Schlegel (1840-1903), was one of the most distinguished sinologists of the 19th-century and co-founder, with Henri Cordier of T'oung Pao, which is still published today. "The most prominent figure in this period is no doubt Gustaaf Schlegel... not only because he was the first person to be appointed Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Leiden, in 1877, but also because of the monumental Dutch-Chinese dictionary he produced" (Wilt L. Idema ed., Chinese Studies in the Netherlands: Past, Present and Future, 2014, p. 129).
