First edition, signed limited issue, number 271 of 1,000 copies signed by Truman; this is the copy of President Jimmy Carter, with his name in gilt on the front cover and with his library stamp on the limitation page.Truman was Carter's favourite President. Carter once explained: "as far as Harry Truman was concerned, I thought he was the greatest president of this century. He was always the one that I mentioned when I was asked that question, never anyone else. I thought about him often when I was in the White House... Also, I felt kind of a kinship with him. We both came from a kind of community that was similar in some ways, and we went back home after the election and the service in the White House" (Oral history interview conducted for Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, October 1991, accessible online). Mr. Citizen reflects on that same passage from presidential power to private citizenship. The subject had particular resonance for Carter, whose post-presidency lasted more than 43 years, longer than that of any other US president. Several chapters bear directly on Carter's own experience: "Should a former President speak his mind?", "What to do with former presidents", "What happens to a President's family".The ink stamp, "from the library of Jimmy Carter", was added ahead of the book's inclusion in the posthumous sale of Carter's library at Christie's, with proceeds benefiting the Carter Family Foundation.
