The American Presidents. Presentation copy from President George H. W. Bush to Jimmy Carter, inscribed by Bush on a presentation bookplate mounted to the front free endpaper verso, "To President Jimmy Carter, Merry Christmas 1989. George Bush".Despite their political differences - and Bush's role as Reagan's running mate in Carter's landslide defeat in 1980 - the two presidents maintained cordial, respectful relations. Following Bush's death, Carter stated that "His administration was marked by grace, civility, and social conscience".Published to mark Bush's inauguration and the bicentenary of George Washington's first inauguration, the book contains a biography of every American president. It describes Carter as having "brought to the White House an honest grin, a disarming candor, and lots of inexperience" (p. 383), and the newly inaugurated Bush as having "offered the nation the chance to continue in the direction which President Reagan had so compellingly outlined" (p. 444). The copy is out-of-series from an edition of 1,000 copies. The opening text page has the ink stamp, "from the library of Jimmy Carter", added ahead of the book's inclusion in the posthumous sale of Carter's library at Christie's, with proceeds benefiting the Carter Family Foundation.
