A presentation card from the Bushes is also inserted; the volume was specially bound for presentation and has Carter's name lettered in gilt on the front cover below the presidential seal.Despite their political differences - and Bush's role as Reagan's running mate in Carter's landslide defeat in 1980 - the two presidents maintained cordial, respectful relations. Following Bush's death, Carter stated that "His administration was marked by grace, civility, and social conscience".Boorstin served as Librarian of Congress under Ford, Carter, and Reagan. The Americans: The Democratic Experience was first published in 1973 and was the third in his trilogy on the evolution of the American character. The book covers the century following the Civil War and details how technological innovation, mass production, and consumerism transformed American life and national identity. It was awarded the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for History. The copyright page records this as the sixth printing, the publication year unspecified.Underneath the bookplate is the ink stamp, "from the library of Jimmy Carter", added ahead of the book's inclusion in the posthumous sale of Carter's library at Christie's, with proceeds benefiting the Carter Family Foundation.
