At the time of publication, she was professor of peace and conflict studies at the United Nations-affiliated University for Peace, a position she continues to hold.The book, which was only issued in wrappers, is a revisionist account of the first intifada. Its central argument is that the uprising is too often remembered through images of young Palestinians throwing stones at Israeli soldiers, when its initial strength came from an organized, largely nonviolent campaign of civil resistance. In his introduction, Carter endorses this interpretation and indeed presents the movement as a model to be encouraged: "The Palestinians' nonviolent resistance in the first intifada, documented here, contested military occupation from a store of classic methods used on every continent in today's world...
