The Economic Consequences of Mr. Churchill. First edition of Keynes's celebrated critique of the decision by Winston Churchill, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, to return Britain to the gold standard.Churchill announced the policy in his Budget statement on 28 April 1925. Keynes, who had advised Churchill and the Treasury against it, argued that it would leave sterling about 10 per cent overvalued, depressing prices and wages while worsening unemployment.Keynes developed his case in three Evening Standard articles in July 1925 and expanded them into this pamphlet published later that month. The pamphlet anticipates many of the arguments later developed in The General Theory (1936).Churchill's policy is widely regarded as having aggravated Britain's economic difficulties. Britain left the gold standard in September 1931 and never returned.
