Irish Home Rule. First edition of one of the most controversial speeches of Churchill's early career, advocating Irish Home Rule as part of a federal United Kingdom.Churchill was scheduled to speak at the Ulster Hall, where his father, Lord Randolph, had delivered a celebrated anti-Home Rule address in 1886. Unionist opposition and threats of violence forced the meeting's transfer to Celtic Park in predominantly Catholic and nationalist West Belfast. Nine years later, as colonial secretary, Churchill signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which provided for the creation of the Irish Free State.This copy is stamped "14", identifying it as disbound from the Liberal Publication Department's annual collection, Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1912.
