Presidential memorial certificate. Jimmy Carter's presidential memorial certificate, issued to his family after his death in recognition of his service as a United States naval officer. "The United States of America honors the memory of Jimmy Carter. This certificate is awarded by a grateful nation in recognition of devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country in the Armed Forces of the United States. J. R. Biden, Jr, President of the United States". The Veterans Administration began issuing the certificates to the families of deceased veterans in 1962. Each bears the printed signature of the president in office at the time of issue. Carter served seven years on active duty in the United States Navy, principally as a submarine officer. He attained the rank of lieutenant and trained for the pioneering nuclear-submarine programme before leaving active service in 1953; he remained in the Naval Reserve until 1961.Following Carter's death, part of his library was sold at Christie's with proceeds benefiting the Carter Family Foundation; the certificate was included (13-27 January 2026, lot 883).
