The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. First edition of the third novel in the Narnia series, featuring the return to Narnia by Edmund and Lucy and telling the story of a voyage across the eastern seas aboard Prince Caspian's ship, the Dawn Treader. The character of Reepicheep, a valiant talking mouse, was praised by the editors of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction as "one of Lewis's finest imaginings" ("Recommended Reading", F&SF, February 1953). Lewis's major inspiration for this "Odyssey of Narnia" (McColman) were the Old Irish Immrama, adventurous sea journeys among islands, and in particular the medieval legend of St Brendan's voyage to the Land of Promise: "the similarities in both plot and detail are so numerous that we could argue that C. S. Lewis has actually made his own, 20th-century contribution, to the literature of the Immrama" (McColman).
