The Life of Mrs. Sherwood, (chiefly Autobiographical), First edition, decidedly uncommon, particularly so when well preserved in the original cloth, as is this copy. Mary M. Sherwood (1775-1851) was a woman "of great intellectual strength and with deep religious views … After residing eleven years in Dinapore, Cawnpore and Meerut, Mrs Sherwood returned to England … where she became a famous writer of children's stories" (Riddick).Edited by her daughter, this memoir includes additional material concerning Sherwood's husband, Henry (1776-1849), an officer in the 53rd Foot, who served in India. According to Buckland's Dictionary of Indian Biography, she "paid much attention to charity and orphans' homes".
