Denys Watkins-Pitchford (1905-1990), the author, illustrator, and naturalist won the Carnegie Medal in 1942 for his fantasy novel The Little Grey Men. The present novel (aimed at "young children to read to themselves") is an example of one of his numerous other works featuring his own distinctive illustrations.A contemporary review in the Times Literary Supplement stated that "this story about a family of bullfinches and their struggle to survive the dangers that surround them is sure to appeal to children who enjoy tales of wild life". The Manchester Guardian stated that "a child who picked up this one would choose well".
