From 1820-1825, Charles Lamb captivated English readership as Elia in the London Magazine, producing a myriad of charming, idiosyncratic, and perceptive personal essays. This fine edition, printed in 1903 and featuring an introduction from biographer and critic Alfred Ainger, contains both Lamb's first series of Elia essays as well as his later writings and personal fallacies. 8vo (18 x 13 cm); marbled endpapers, slight foxing to prelims, two faded ownership inscriptions to front flyleaves (1906 and 1972), internal green ribbon bookmark; finely bound in half green morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt in two compartments, with decorative floral pattern in gilt, top edge gilt, edges untrimmed, slight rubbing to corners, very good; xxii; 425 pp.
