An attractive set in contemporary quarter morocco of the first critical edition of the works of one of the best Russian authors. Edited by Nikolay Tikhonravov (1832-93), this edition was first published in 1889-94 and hailed as a great scholarly accomplishment. Tikhonravov having carefully verified the text against Gogol's manuscripts, corrected many mistakes and inaccuracies made earlier, and created the basis for all subsequent publications until Soviet times. 8vo (20.3 x15 cm); edited by Tikhonravov, with a biography by Shenrok, illustrated with two portraits engraved by Brockhaus in Leipzig, two facsimile manuscripts and three sketches after Gogol, first quire loose; bound in contemporary quarter dark red morocco, spines gilt with raised bands, 'Gogol' embossed in gilt to upper cover of each vol, a fine set.
