Inagawa Cemetery – David Chipperfield Architects / Risaku Suzuki A beautifully produced Japanese architecture and photography book documenting Inagawa Cemetery in Hyogo, Japan, designed by David Chipperfield Architects and photographed by acclaimed Japanese photographer Risaku Suzuki. The cemetery’s chapel and rest pavilion were designed by British architect David Chipperfield, recipient of the 2023 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Chipperfield traveled repeatedly to Japan during the development of the project, engaging in an extended dialogue with the client to create a place of contemplation and prayer that could be shared beyond particular religious or cultural traditions. Rather than treating the architecture as an isolated object, the project establishes a subtle relationship between building, landscape, garden, light and the surrounding natural environment. Photographer Risaku Suzuki visited Inagawa Cemetery repeatedly over the course of one year, recording the architecture as it changed through the seasons. His photographs move beyond conventional architectural documentation, paying close attention to natural light, vegetation, weather, spatial transitions and the experience of moving through the site. Suzuki is internationally recognized for a photographic practice concerned with perception, landscape, time and the act of seeing.
