Scarce original 1855 edition of Little Charley's Visit to the Menagerie, published in Boston by Brown, Bazin, & Co. This charming mid-19th-century American children's book follows Little Charley during a visit to a menagerie and contains numerous period illustrations and descriptions of the animals he encounters, including the bison and other exotic animals. A wonderful example of early American children's literature and of the traveling menagerie culture that helped introduce children to wild and exotic animals before modern zoological parks became widespread. Original red cloth hardcover with ornate blind-stamped decoration to the boards and gilt decoration and lettering on the spine. Condition shows age-related wear consistent with a book published in 1855. Covers have rubbing and edge wear, with heavier wear and loss to portions of the gilt spine decoration and wear at the spine ends and corners. Interior pages show scattered foxing, spotting and age toning. Illustrations and printed text remain attractive and clearly visible.
