Opera omnia. Second Sommalius edition of the collected works of the great ascetical writer, revised and expanded from the first of 1601. This edition adds both the attractive portrait and the famous manual of spiritual devotion, The Imitation of Christ, a surprising omission from the first edition.The editor, Henricius Sommalius (1534-1619), was the first rector of the Jesuit college in Douai and edited the works of several medieval theologians and Church Fathers. He used the original manuscript of Kempis's Imitation, acquired by the Jesuit College in Antwerp in 1595. His edition was widely reprinted and was the source of multiple vernacular translations.There is a contemporary ownership signature to the title page of "Matthia Starchle", and his annotations to around 130 pages, reflecting a particular interest in the author's life and the Imitation, and a close engagement with the sermons.
