Lodewijcksz's journal documents the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies under Cornelis de Houtman, introducing European readers to ethnographic images and maps of the Indian Ocean, Java, Sumatra, and Bali. Van Neck's account of the second expedition details the Moluccas and includes a French-Malay-Javanese vocabulary.Lodewijcksz accompanied de Houtmann on his pioneering voyage. The ships rounded the Cape of Good Hope in February 1595, proceeded to Sumatra, stopped in Java to trade in Bantam (the main commercial port), and eventually reached Bali in 1597. Lodewijcksz's journal was published in 1598 in Latin, Dutch, and French by the same publisher in Amsterdam; this second French edition is an exact reproduction of the first. Some of the engravings were copied by Theodore de Bry to illustrate his Petit voyages.The journal "provided European readers with the most detailed descriptions of Java to date and with the first continuous description of Bali in any language" (Lach, p. 438).
