Original cloth, spines lettered in gilt, typographic wrappers (price-clipped); pp. xvi, 192; xiv, 418; wrappers minimally spotted, one with small marginal tear to front cover near hinge, a little offsetting from endpapers, otherwise very good, contemporary Japanese bookseller's labels inside front covers. Later edition (first 1953 and 1955) of these classics of modern Western Islamic and Qur'anic scholarship . The books by the eminent Scottish Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh from 1964 to 1979, Watt (1909-2006), remained in print up to the 1990s, and are considered the foremost Western interpretations of Islam, a faith that informed Watt's Christian faith as a priest of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
