The World Crisis. 1916-1918. First US edition, presentation copies, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of each volume, "Inscribed for O. B. Stephenson by Winston S. Churchill", and dated by him 1 February 1932 in the second volume.Orlistus Bell Stephenson (1867-1940), manager of the Emerson Bureau lecture agency in Chicago, arranged Churchill's lectures in St Louis on 1 February and in Chicago on 2 and 7 February. On 11 February, Stephenson wrote to Churchill, "If you will come and settle down in Chicago or St. Louis, we will send you to the United States Senate, at least. In time we might even consider you for President of the United States. In any event, we are all for you!" (Churchill Archives, CHAR 1/398B/197).These are the third and fourth volumes, issued together, of Churchill's history of the First World War, published in six volumes from 1923 to 1931. This US edition slightly preceded the British edition.Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
