Norman commemorates the tradition of nicknaming in Key West, characteristic of the "Old Island" heritage that Norman claims is "gone...never to return." Walter H. Norman was born in Key West in 1916. He spent two years at UF in Gainesville, and moved to Miami in search of employment after the 1935 hurricane. He moved to Key Largo in 1971, and spent a great deal of time reading and researching information about old and present-day Key West. Nicknames and Conch Tales is composed of stories that he knows to be fact as well as of stories in which he was one of the characters. Bookleggers is Miami's first and only free book store.
