Modern Athens is accompanied by an illustrated guide to the castles and stately homes of Scotland, in which most engravings are after John Preston Neale, with a couple after Shepherd and H. Gastinean.Jones & Co and Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1793-1864) collaborated on three other books in the late 1820s, two showing London and one showing Bath and Bristol. His lifelike scenes, which were typically populated with figures, horses, and carriages, are "outstanding for their skill and beauty" (Houfe).
