ITEM DESCRIPTION This is the Japanese translation of Georges Mounin's Clefs pour la linguistique ( ditions Seghers, 1968), published in Japan as 語語学とは何か by Taishukan Shoten (大修飊書店). This Japanese edition was first published on November 5, 1970, and this copy is a first edition (初版) printing. Translated by Yoshio Fukui, Akira Ito, and Keizaburo Maruyama, this is a hardcover book measuring approximately 20 x 13.5 cm with 245 pages, complete with its dust jacket (fitted with a protective vinyl cover). The book offers a structuralist introduction to linguistics for a general educated readership, covering language and communication, phonology, syntax, semantics, and stylistics. Background: Georges Mounin (1910–1993) was a leading French linguist and translation theorist. This Japanese edition of his Clefs pour la linguistique ( ditions Seghers, 1968) was published by Taishukan Shoten just two years after the French original appeared. One of its three translators, Keizaburo Maruyama, went on to become a noted scholar of Ferdinand de Saussure in Japan, later authoring and editing further Saussure studies also published by Taishukan Shoten.
