March (1899-1977) followed the success of The Wild Party with this verse tale of an African-American boxer, "his best years in the ring lost to jail, who wins a long-fixed bout instead of throwing it and pays for his last victory with his life" (ANB).It was the basis for the acclaimed 1949 noir adaptation directed by Robert Wise and starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter.
