The Great Gatsby. First UK edition, resurrecting British interest in an American classic that was almost forgotten. The Grey Walls Press led a wider revival of Fitzgerald's work in the 1940s, promoting the work of the man posthumously heralded in America as one of their greatest authors. The Great Gatsby remains at the centre of Fitzgerald's legacy as perhaps the defining cultural artefact of the Jazz Age. The novel had previously been issued in England by Chatto & Windus in 1926, printed from the American plates. The Grey Walls Press edition, however, was completely reset making it the true UK first. The press was founded in 1940 by the poet and Poetry Quarterly editor Charles Wrey Gardiner (1901-81); it operated in Billericay, Essex, until 1954.
