The Jungle. First edition, the "Sustainers' Edition" issue. The author's signature in black ink is tipped-in on the front free endpaper. "The Jungle ranks today as one of the most famous of American novels... If ever a single work may be said to have anchored an author's career and determined his future course, it is The Jungle" (Ahouse, p. 9).As stated on the bookplate "an appeal was published in the Socialist press for advance orders to make possible the publication of this book. About five thousand copies were ordered, of which this is one". This edition includes three pages of publisher's advertisements not present in the trade edition. The binding includes the Socialist Party emblem on the front cover.This copy has all the appropriate points described by Ahouse: an unbroken "1" on the verso of the title page, "blue uniform with brass buttons" on p. 42, "pay them eight dollars and forty cents" on p. 82, and an original "3" on p. 385.
