Don Quixote de la Mancha. An attractively bound copy of Jarvis's popular translation, described by its modern editor as "sensitive, careful, and full of life. It is closer in spirit and style to the original than most recent versions" (Riley, p. xviii).Don Quixote is a landmark of Western literature and one of the most translated books in the world, first published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. "It was the variety, the liveliness, and the gibes at the famous, which won it instant fame... Within months Don Quixote and Sancho Panza had become legendary" (PMM). The text is the translation by Charles Jervas (1675-1739), whose surname was misprinted on the title page of the first edition, giving rise to the familiar name "Jarvis translation". First published posthumously in 1742, the translation has been frequently reprinted. The illustrator, John Heaviside Clark (c. 1771-1863), was a Scottish landscape painter and engraver, known as "Waterloo Clark" because of the sketches he made on the field immediately after the battle. He was a regular exhibitor Royal Academy between 1801 and 1832.
