It is just as dense in its world-building as its predecessors were…and as the further Dune novels would be. By this point in the series, the main character, the human/sandworm hybrid Leto, has ruled as a dictator for 3500 years, but his end may be coming. What happens then? Leto may not know, but he has some clues based on his knowledge of and experience with the entirety of human history, and Herbert studs the book with quotes from Leto’s speeches and dictations specifically left for future generations. In this way Herbert imparts his own questions and thoughts on the cycles of history and of human evolution. The book was largely praised when it first came out in 1981 and was hugely popular. It ended the year as the 11th best-selling fiction book of the year—not the 11th top selling book in its genre, but in fiction overall, not something often seen in publishing. This is near-fine copy of the first edition, with a cover illustration by Brad Holland on the near-fine dust jacket. The jacket shows bumping on the top right corner of the front and slight shelf wear along the edges. The back of the jacket is clean and has no tears or similar damage but does exhibit age tanning.
