All the Sad Young Men. First edition, first printing, handsomely bound, of the author's "strongest collection" of stories, which Fitzgerald edited in light of his masterpiece of the previous year, The Great Gatsby. These stories originally appeared in magazines: for this collected edition, Fitzgerald removed from the stories lines he borrowed for his novel, believing that "it was dishonest to use the same phrases in different books" (Bruccoli, p. 272)."As was his custom, Fitzgerald polished the magazine texts of these stories. He was convinced that the book publication of stories affected his reputation, whereas the magazine appearances were ignored by the critics" (ibid.) Among the nine stories are "The Rich Boy", "Winter Dreams", "Absolution", and "The Sensible Thing".
