Diary and Correspondence. A handsomely bound set of Pepys's diaries. John Smith's edition, the first to transcribe the diary, was first published in 1825.The text was painstakingly deciphered from Pepys's shorthand by Smith, a task which took him three years to complete. He did not realise that the manual for the system, Thomas Shelton's Tutor to Tachygraphy (1642), was easily accessible in his own college library.
