1867 HOLY BIBLE — WILLIAM COLLINS — TARTAN PLAID BINDING A particularly attractive 1867 Victorian Holy Bible, published by William Collins, in an unusual decorative tartan / Scottish plaid binding, with gilt-decorated leather spine, all edges gilt, and colored biblical maps. Size: approximately 6 x 4 inches. The binding is the outstanding feature of this little Bible. The boards have a striking glossy red, green, black and yellow tartan pattern, with “M‘Farlane” stamped in gilt at the top of the front board. The dark leather spine has raised bands and extensive gilt decoration, with the title: HOLY BIBLE REFERENCES The text block has all edges gilt, with an attractive decorative gauffered or impressed pattern visible in the gilt. The volume contains illustrated biblical maps, including a colored map titled: “Countries Between Egypt and Canaan — The Supposed Route of the Israelites” The map traces the Exodus route through Egypt, Sinai and Canaan and includes an engraved vignette of the Pyramids of Ghizeh, Egypt. It is identified at the foot as William Collins, London & Glasgow. William Collins was one of the important centers of Victorian Bible publishing in Glasgow, where Bible production expanded considerably during the nineteenth century. Surviving Collins Bibles from 1867 are documented with color maps and illustrations of the biblical lands.
