This is a detailed history of the evolution of armour from the Roman occupation to the early 17th century, illustrated with examples of suits of armour worn by famous figures such as Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales.J. Starkie Gardner (1844-1930) was a sculptor and historian of decorative ironwork. His company provided the metalwork for Two Temple Place in London and the gates of Holyrood Palace. He released a follow-up to this treatise titled "Foreign Armour in England" in The Portfolio, Number 38 (1898), then a combined volume later that year.
